Leadership

The middle is where it gets decided

The start is exciting and the end is satisfying. Almost everything that determines the outcome happens in a stretch that has neither quality.

The shape of it

The launch energy is spent. The compounding has not yet become visible. The work is the same work it was last month and will be next month.

Nothing is wrong. Nothing is happening either.

Why it is the filter

Almost anyone can do the exciting part. The middle requires continuing without feedback, which is a completely different capacity from enthusiasm.

Most things that do not work out do not fail dramatically. They are abandoned here.

Most things do not fail. They get abandoned in the part where nothing is happening.

The specific danger

Substituting activity for progress. Redesigning something. Changing a system. Starting an adjacent project.

All of it produces the feeling that was missing, and none of it is the work.

What actually gets people through

Manufacturing the structure that the start supplied for free. Specific goals with real dates. One activity that happens on a schedule regardless of how the week feels.

And other people doing the same thing, who can confirm that this phase is a phase.

The measurement problem

The metrics that matter in the middle move too slowly to be motivating. Find a leading indicator that moves weekly — activity you control rather than results you do not.

It is not the outcome. It is the only feedback available at this timescale.

What endurance sport is genuinely good for

This, and mostly only this. Months of training with no race and no visible improvement is the same psychological task.

It is the one place the analogy holds.
